We arrived at Freeport marina fuel dock at about 1pm. Other damaged boats were already there. More than 1/3 of the boats started did not finish because of storm damage, some much worse than ours. After refueling & pumping holding tanks we took a break on dry land and had lunch at the marina restaurant. It was dicided that we would spend the night in Freeport to get the boat in order & leave Saturday am & motor up the intracoastal waterway back to Kemah. The remainder of the day was spent cleaning up the aftermath of the storm above & below decks.
We could not be happier with the performance of It's Perfect in storm conditions. It handled everything that came it's way perfectly, proving itself a solid, seaworthy offshore boat.
Saturday am came quickly with everyone feeling better after a good nights sleep. It's Perfect left the dock approx 10am motoring up the ICW. This ditch is very shallow & traffic of all sorts use it. We kept company with HUGE commercial vessels, pleasure craft & dolphin swimming all around us. Late afternoon while passing a large oncoming barge we ran aground in shallow water. Stuck... We were able to free ourselves, but in the process the rudder was damaged and we lost our ability to steer. After determining the damage was serious a call was made to Tow Boat US. Not the way we wanted to end our adventure, but we arrived at our Watergate dock safe & sound at about 11pm.
The crew aboard on this trip went above & beyond with every dificult situation, keeping a sense of humor & positive attitude. We all learned valuable lessons about being offshore in storm conditions. Even though some of our passage was difficult, it was a great adventure & we can't wait to get back out there.
WHAT A GREAT TRIP, even with all the problems. Would love to have been there. I am so proud of you guys for following your dream....love ya, Barbara
