A FEW DAYS IN NORFOLK

September 5, 2012

We arrived in Norfolk & anchored in the Elizabeth River at 4:30PM on August 30.  We are taking a few days to provision & take care of some maintenance before we head slowly for Charleston, SC.

BRIGHT & CLEAN INSIDE THE HARDTOP
By Saturday the 1st we were ready for a work day aboard.  Rod removed the lower deck of the hardtop & we finished the enclosure attaching the windshield to the top.  In between sewing the connection pieces for the windshield, I took the opportunity to clean  the underside of the deck & aluminum braces.  Wow you do not realize how dirty it gets.  It looks great.  By late afternoon Rod had everything put back together & life was good again.  It is now time for a glass of wine & admiring our handy work.

The churches in Norfolk are old & wonderful.  On Sunday
you can hear church bells for miles.

Sunday began very warm & got hot.  We took the bikes into Norfolk in search of a Walmart.  It appeared to be 6 or 7 miles away, so off we went.  After riding for 6 miles through a questionable part of town, we turned into the nearest grocery & picked only  the necessities.  We then headed back to the downtown area & then rode off into the Freemason Historic District.  As you have guessed one of my favorite things to do in wander the street of historic neighborhoods.
Monday we still needed groceries & there was laundry to do.  We chose to do our chores in Portsmouth.  Rod dropped me off at the laundry & returned to Its Perfect to fill the fuel & water tanks.  Those chores finished we rode to the local Food Lion about 3 miles away & finished our shopping.   Then it was time for holiday fireworks from the comfort of the cockpit.

Still watching the storms we spent Tue & Wed preparing the boat for departure.  If all is well we will head south through the Virginia Cut beginning tomorrow.
