WELCOME TO NASSAU

FEBRUARY 22, 2013

At 10:30am we departed Chub Cay to cross the Northwest Passage, our next destination Nassau.  The entire day was spent with the wind on our nose at 25 to 35 knots.  It's Perfect slammed into the breaking seas sending water crashing over the bow & decks.  We must make our anchorage in Nassau before night fall.  As the water washed over the decks, we missed something that would cause us much grief & money in the days ahead.  At some point during our passage, a 50 ft. dock line that was attached to the bow, was washed overboard.
The sun was sinking into the waters of the Northwest Passage as we entered Nassau Harbor.  All of Nassau Bay was crowded with boats.  We turned in & threaded our way through anchor lines looking for  a place to anchor.  Finally we turned to drop the anchor in 12ft of water & there was a loud noise from the bottom of the boat.  We thought we had hit something.  Very quickly we discovered we had no propulsion.  We were in the middle of a very full anchorage with no way to control the boat.  Rod immediately dropped the anchor to stop us from drifting.  Because we were so close to the other boats he could only put out a fraction of the chain we normally would.  Welcome to Nassau.
Dark settled over us & Rod prepared for a miserable night on anchor watch, still not knowing exactly what had happened.
