MT. HARTMAN DOVE SANTUARY

AUGUST 8, 2013

We have been here for about 3 weeks, time flies even sitting in paradise.  Well truth be told we are not doing a lot of sitting.  Walking has become almost a daily activity.  We walk to Prickly Bay, Budget Marine, Ace Hardware, the IGA, Hog Island, the Mt. Hartman Dove Sanctuary & anywhere else we decide to go.

Our first trip was exhausting, out of shape is the only word for us.  Now it is easier every time we put on our tennis shoes & go.  Today we walked into town & Ace Hardware to get spark plugs & oil for the generators.  Most of our trips are 2 to 3 miles long, climbing up & walking down the hilly terrain.

Earlier this this week we walked through the
Mt. Hartman Dove Sanctuary, home of the critically endangered Grenada Dove, the national bird.  The population of this bird is said to be less than 100 adults & declining.  Our walk was long, hot & dusty.  The path wound through the dry thorn scrub trees that cover the low hills of the coast. We saw many birds on our walk but no sign of the Grenada Dove.  43% of the existing population is suppose to be in the Dove Sanctuary & they stay well hidden.

We did see many other dove, song birds, hummingbirds & blackbirds.  The end of the trail looked out over Clark's Court Bay behind Hog Island.
CLARK'S COURT BAY

On our walk back, in the middle of the dirt path we passed a teenage girl & her brother walking from Hog Island over to Prickly Bay in search of a friend.  They are from Australia & live on a boat with their parents.  Janna said they arrived in the  Bahamas 7 years ago intending to spend 1 year.  4 years later they cleared into Grenada to spend a couple of months & have been here for 3 years.  Her brother Caleb was born on the boat 5 years ago.

Janna dinghy's around the bays & walks all over what she calls the "BUSH" with & without her brother in tow.  She was very friendly & didn't act like she missed the real world at all, or maybe she has forgotten what it is like.  It seems people get to these islands & never leave.  There are some very odd & interesting people in this cruising community, all here for there own reasons.  At the end of the day we are all living on our boats in some of the most beautiful islands in the world.  Not bad...............
