MOVING NORTH ON THE ICW

AUGUST 3, 2012

At 11 AM we pulled away from the fuel dock in Beaufort & passed under a 64ft fixed bridge into the Adams canal.  Our destination is an anchorage about 30 miles away just north of Oriental, NC.  The day was in the 90's & there was a light breeze.  It's nice to  be on the move again.

The canal is dotted with homes facing the water with their own private dock.  We saw a sign advertising a new private dock with power lift for sale for $75,000.  It appeared to have a small lot with a power new pole.  The next lot had a travel trailer parked on it beside a new dock.  It was an interesting idea & a way to keep a boat on the water within easy reach.

MILE MARKER
We left the canal & motored into the Neuse River at Oriental.  Then turning into the South River where the winds picked up & storm clouds gathered.  Quickly the wind turned very cool & showed 30 to 40 knots.  We closed up the cockpit just in time, it rained hard for a few minutes but most of the storm blew right over us.  The by the time we took the turn into the approach for our anchorage, the sun was shining & there were puffy clouds about.

We are anchored in a large cove just off the river in about 12ft of water.  The wind has become a breeze, the water is calm & the shores are all wooded.  With only a few houses visible it is easy to relax just as if were alone on the water.
