BACK IN THE LAND OF SPANISH MOSS |
September 21, 2012 - After leaving Cricket Cove Marina we spent the day motor sailing south along the east shore of what is called The Strand, a 60 mile stretch of barrier island with beautiful Atlantic beaches. The side of the island facing the canal is lined with restaurants, shops, parks & neighborhoods all hugging the edge of the water. In between all the populated area's, the shore was lined with huge trees & marshy grass. Small marina's are tucked into wooded coves along the way.
BABY SHARK IN THEIR NET |
With sunny, breezy weather the canal is full of pleasure craft. Sailboats, power & fishing boats are coming & going. We were making between 5 & 6 knots & a man in a fishing boat ahead was working very hard to land a fish. As we passed he pulled up a small shark, I watched as they worked to take out the hook & let the shark go. No telling what you will find swimming beneath us.
EVERYONE SHARES THE WATER |
With the tide helping & a steady breeze we have made 55 miles & turned into the Georgetown cove. The anchorage is smaller than it looks in the pictures. There is space for us, it's late in the season. We dropped 2 anchors, the swing room is very tight in the small cove. We are anchored with about a dozen sailboats & moored shrimp boats. We are just off the waterfront of the sleepy historic town.
We will spend a few days here & see the some of the historic sights. We sit in the cockpit as the sun goes down & are thinking about our new life stile. We have dreamed a lot of dreams in our lives, but living this dream is incredible
The sun is setting over Georgetown, SC. |
