CRICKET COVE MARINA, LITTLE RIVER, SC

SEPTEMBER 19, 2012

LITTLE RIVER, SC
We pulled the anchor & left Southport behind at 8:30AM.  The weather was beautiful with a light wind.  There are 5 bridges for us to pass under before we get to South Carolina.  The country here is beautiful & highly populated.  There are very affluent neighborhoods next to the very average, all seeking space along the waterway.
IT'S PERFECT AT
CRICKET COVE MARINA

We did not have to wait on the bridges for a change & we motor sailed making 5 1/2 to 6 knots.  At 1:35PM we crossed the state line into South Carolina.  After 3 days of not great anchorages we decided to give ourselves a break & a good nights sleep.  At 3:30 we arrived at Cricket Cove Marina, Little River, SC.  The rates were fair for a transient slip, but their monthly rate was amazingly low, $300 a month for any size boat. The marina has only about 50+ slips, but has a very large area for dry storage.  The staff was very friendly & professional.  Their main business seems to be dry storage, they stayed busy pulling boats in & out of the water, servicing & cleaning them.  It was non stop during business hours.

After docking & getting everything hooked up we took our glasses & walked the dock.  Everyone we met were very nice.  Kim Heath aboard a 30ft Catalina was having the new name put on her boat.  She lost her daughter Stephanie 2 years ago to a drunk driver so she named the boat Free Spirit for her.  As the family copes with their loss they are staying very busy with positive action.  They have set up a Brunswick Community College Foundation.

They have already helped one student finish nursing school & a second has been picked who is going to school for a degree in Computer Science.  This is a very beneficial way to help struggling students attain their goals.
ROD DEEP IN DISCUSSION
HOW TO INSTALL
ROLLER FURLER

There was also work to be done.  Bob & friend Earl on board 44 ft. sailboat were dealing with an electrical problem.  There was smoke coming out of a vent, where there is smoke the can be fire.  Rod went to their aid & helped with a wiring issue & the smoke stopped.  Second on their list was installing a new roller fuller.  We were not there long enough for the complete installation but  the project was well under way when we finally left the dock at 10:15AM Friday.

As we were preparing to bring in the dock lines an adult bald eagle swept down from a tree across the canal & retrieved his breakfast out of the water, right beside the boat.  Watching the everyday tasks of wild animals so close at hand is incredible.  It always puts a smile on my face & gives me feeling of peace & calm.
