SOUTHPORT, NC

Because of high winds & thunderstorms we spent two nights anchored in a cove just off the ICW, 50 miles south of Beaufort.  The first night about 2AM a storm blew thru with 40+ KNOTS of wind.  There is nothing quite like being anchored in the pitch black of night, with no lights ashore & listening to the wind howl through the rigging.  Needless to say Rod did not get much sleep the rest of the night.  We were very close the military base & had plenty of activity during the day.  Navy boats were running up & down the canal while helicopters flew over even in the stormy weather.  We even heard another Live Fire exercise in the background.  After 2 nights we were ready to get further away from the action.

We pulled the anchor at 8AM on Wednesday & continued south.  Finding good anchorages between Beaufort NC. & South Carolina has proven to be a little difficult.  We moved on to an anchorage just past Southport, NC.  By the time we arrived the sun was setting & we were not happy with the looks of the anchorage.  We turned back to Southport & anchored just off the shipping channel.  By the time we dropped the anchor the stars were coming out & the wind had become a breeze.  After a very long day on the water we ended our day with a quiet glass of wine watching the traffic lights on the waterway.
