CROSSING THE GREAT BAHAMA BANK

FEBRUARY 20, 2013
SUNSET OVER GUN CAY

After a long sleepless night rolling in the Atlantic swells of the open anchorage which was recommended in The Gentleman’s Guide to Passages South, we were again underway at 7AM.

THROUGH THE CUT INTO THE
GREAT BAHAMAS BANK
We passed through the cut between Gun Cay & North Cat Cay into the waters of the Great Bahamas Bank.  Immediately the water turned a beautiful aqua blue.   Most of the day the water was so clear you could count the star fish lying on the sandy bottom as we passed by in 10 to 15ft of water.

The morning winds were light, but by noon turned to the north at 15 to 20 knots and under full sail we made 6 to 7
1/2 knots towards our destination of Chub Cay.  It was a beautiful day which almost made up for the long grueling day that we spent, crossing the Gulf Stream.

As the sun went down we were running hard toward our anchorage off Chub Cay. The stars came out as we dropped the anchor,  it was about 7:30PM.
