St
Thomas is a beautiful island & Charlotte Amalie is a small community built on the side of small green mountains surrounding our anchorage. Every Monday thru Wednesday
Carnival cruise ships arrive at 7am offloading swarms of tourists
seeking the original island experience. What they see is completely
geared for them. The downtown lines the dock with shops full of
everything from diamonds to antiques. The small dockside park is
home to a multitude of vendors under colorful umbrellas. It is only
a few blocks to the cruise ship docks but the streets are lined with
taxis & small safari buses.
Needless
to say their experience is indeed different from ours. We took the
dinghy to shore & mingled with swimsuit clad, sunburned masses.
They seem to want the perfect tan in a matter of days & instead
end up what looks like a very painful red glow. It is truly amazing
how a quiet small town turns into a loud, bustling swarm of people.
It did not take us long to return to Its Perfect & our waterside
view of all the excitement.
99 STEPS Installed in the mid 1700's from one street level to the next. They are made of ballast bricks brought over from Denmark |
We
are anchored not far from Ron & Monica aboard EOS. They left
Houston about 10 months ahead of us & are now heading for Aruba
for hurricane season. It was great to see them & we spent a
couple of hours catching up with where they have traveled & what
new adventures will be next. They spent last hurricane season in
Trinidad & we learned a lot about what to expect if we choose
Trinidad over Grenada. They only spent a couple of nights here at
anchor & they are off to St. Croix, their last stop before a
nonstop passage to Aruba.
We
have decided to stay put here in Charlotte Amalie until another
system passes. There have been a few showers & high winds but
nothing too bad. We still have laundry, groceries & small parts
too look for. That will keep us busy for a few days.
Craig, Angela & Skip arrive in Tortolla on Saturday to pick up the chartered catamaran & David flies in on Tuesday. Craig & Angela spent 18 months in the islands & charter here every year, it will be great to spend a few days with friends from home. At the end of their charter, David will keep us company as we move south.
