OUR FIRST LOOK AT ST LUCIA

June 12, 2013
TWIN PITONS
ST LUCIA
6am & I am taking over the watch from David, time for him to get some sleep. A cruise ship slips over the horizon as the sun rises into a hazy warm morning. We left Dominica yesterday, June 11 about 10:15am with winds 15+ knots from the east. As we sailed out of the harbor leaving new friends behind, we were 125 miles from our anchorage in St Lucia, Grenadines.

David had reefed the main just before sunset yesterday which turned out to be the perfect thing to do, the winds had increased overnight gusting at times to 35 knots. Before I finished my morning watch David & Rod were in the cockpit checking the charts & the course. After making less progress than expected we changed course to motor sail in a direct line to Soufriere, St Lucia.
FRANCIS HELPING SECURE
ITS PERFECT TO A MORRING
Our last passage was 220 miles, this 125 miles has not been especially hard, just slow & therefore exhausting. By 3pm the lush green island with the volcanic Twin Piton's are in sight & the next stop is a mooring ball at the base of the Petit Piton. By 5pm we had picked up one of the mooring balls that are managed by the park service. We are just off the small town of Soufriere & after a long day on the water, it was time for sun downers in the cockpit. Our mooring is in 75ft of dark blue clear water, the
green mountains rise steeply all around the small bay & there is the smell of flowers in the air. What a beautiful sight.

This was David's final passage for this trip. His plane leaves tomorrow at 2pm to take him back to civilization. We will be sorry to see him go.
