After three days in Porvenir Ben arrived from Texas. He arrived at 6:45am Sunday in a six passenger twin engine plane, July 27. After stowing his backpack and a cup of coffee we were off to the Hollandes Cays.
These
islands are about 18 miles from Porviner just past the Lemon Cays.
It was a beautiful day on the bright blue water, a great sail. Ben
has a 36ft Catalina on Lake Texoma and being a sailor he jumped right
in to life on the boat. We anchored by early afternoon and settled
in for a short stay.
On Monday we motored the dinghy to one of the 8 islands that surrounds us. All of these islands have white sand beaches and palm trees, only 2 have any people. After securing the dinghy we took a walk down the island in the clear shallow water. The first thing we found were small sting rays about 12 in across hovering over the sand in the clear shallow water just a few feet from the shore. Trying not to disturb them we carefully walked out and around them to watch, they were not shy and got close enough for great pictures.
While watching the rays Ben noticed a larger fish gliding across the sand in water less than 2ft deep. Upon closer inspection we saw clearly it was a young shark. We saw 3 different ones of different sizes somewhere around 2ft long, they were baby reef sharks. We all had a great time wading around in what appeared to be a shark and ray nursery.
