PASSAGE BACK TO THE SAN BLAS ISLANDS OF PANAMA

July 23, 2014
We weighed anchor at 6 am, leaving the muddyPortobello harbor heading out into the Caribbean Sea. The sky was cloudy and the winds were steady at 20 knots. In the first few hours we passed several container ships coming and going from the canal as we made steady progress East.

By noon the skies were partly cloudy and the winds that were suppose to be 10 knots were still at 23+ knots. About a mile offshore there was a line of trash in the water. Because of all the rain on the mainland there are limbs, trees and all kinds of debris has been washed down the rivers and into the open water. We decided to stay further offshore in order stay outside of the trash.

TURNING INTO PORVINER
The day was uneventful and by 4 pm we could see the islands in the distance. The skies were hazy and we needed to reach the cut through the reef into Porvenir before dark. All of these islands are surrounded by reefs and low water making it hazardous to navigate in poor light. Our timing was perfect and we turned into the anchorage off Porvenir about 5:30 and anchored 12 hours after leaving Portobello.

BACK IN THE CLEAR BLUE WATER
After a long day on the water we sat in the cockpit with drink in hand happy to be back in clear blue water. We will be here till Sunday when Ben Vickers arrives for a visit. We plan to sail to Holandes Islands for a couple of days and then to Dog Island while he is here. Both great places for snorkeling and walking the beach.

After a week we will return to Porvenir so Ben can catch his small plane back into Panama City then back to the Dallas airport. Life here will be slow and quiet as we spend the next 8 weeks sailing among the hundreds of islands here in Kuna Yala.
