CANAVERAL BARGE CANAL LOCK

JUNE 18, 2012

We took advantage of being at the dock this AM. Got up about 9 & did not hurry around.  Rod spent some time pulling up charts & doing the engine check list & before you know it, NOON.

We have picked an anchorage about 8 miles from here, just off the ICW.  Then tomorrow we will get moving a little earlier & head north.

CHRISTA MCAULIFFE DRAWBRIDGE

First up was calling the SR401 bascule bridge to open.  No problem, the bridge tender stopped the traffic & up it went.  Next was going through the Canaveral Barge Canal Lock.  I need a little more practice handling mooring lines on canal walls. Then it was down the barge canal, which is a 8 mile long canal that connects the Atlantic with the ICW.  As we neared the end of the canal we called the bridge tender for the Christa McAuliffe Drawbridge.  We were told it opens on the half hour, 2:30, a
20 minuet wait.  By 3PM we had entered the ICW & turned south to anchor just next to the canal in 11ft of water.  That was a long process to go less than 10 miles.

There is a great cool breeze off the water & we spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing.  After burgers on the grill, it is the end of another day
