RODRIQUEZ KEY

JUNE 7, 2012

We left Marathon this morning headed for Rodriquez Key 51 miles away.  The day was partly cloudy & there was a 10-15kt breeze most of the way. We arrived about 5pm to anchor in a beautiful, large, open bay.
RODRIQUEZ KEY
SOUTH OF KEY LARGO
As I sit here on the side of It's Perfect waiting for the sun to go down, the water is like glass & there is not a breath of air stirring.  The water temperature is 88.2 degrees.  This is the clearest water I think I have seen in the Keys.  You can see the anchor chain snaking out across the sand & grass bottom.  Large fish have been swimming by & there is a star fish crawling across the chain as I watch.

WAITING ON A COOL BREEZE
A few boats are still coming in, motor yachts, sailboats, fishing boats & dinghy's.  Looking out in the distance I can see small ripples on the water coming our way.  Soon there is fresh breeze blowing across me & everything cools.

ON TH BOW
A GREAT PLACE TO BE

Time for dinner of chicken, rice & vegetables.  Then Rod begins to plan our next move.  We have decided to stay here one more day & then on to
Ft Lauderdale.  We have decided to skip all the traffic & excitement of Miami.

Rodriquez Key has turned out to be a great anchorage.  As we watch the world under the water a 5 to 6 ft. shark slowly swims by It's Perfect into the bay.  From looking at one of our many books on sea life, it appears to be a reef shark.  Just before the sun sets, he passes going out on the same path, very close to the boat.  It makes you wonder if it is a daily trip into a fish cleaning station on the shore, maybe for dinner.  It is very quiet & peaceful here, all the other boats in the anchorage are so far away we hear nothing.

Tomorrow we plan to take care of engine maintenance, change the impeller, clean the fuel filter, check fluids.  We also will work on the existing list of chores & laundry.  Never fear!  There is always stop to take time to enjoy living aboard.

  1. Looks like fun times in the Keys. Good call on skipping Miami. The city mooring field is highly over-rated. Digging the sunset and moon pictures. Keep them coming! Also enjoying your grading system of anchorages and moorings.
As for me, I am blowing out of Boston in a few short weeks. My next assignment, tragically, is Cabo San Lucas. I am terribly disappointed. I am informed that "una mas cervesa, por favor" does not constitute being bilingual. Fair winds....

    1. Well Lindas and My idea of fun may differ from some younger people. We had a great time and enjoyed our "moments" with Paul. He is his own brand of fun. We rested alot and got some small things done on the boat. There just wasn't much in Miami to pull us in. So here we are in the money capital of the US, "MEGA YACHT CITY". Wow, if you don't have 80ft LWL you got SQUAT! Multi
million dollar yachts parked next to multi million dollar houses. What's cool is that we are moored within 100 ft of several.
Linda does a good job on the pics and posts, I try to provide input on anchorages and such.
Good news on your Cabo gig, Rod

  2. I wish my bilingual could get me somewhere other than the bathroom! Cabo sounds great!
