We left the River Street Dock in Savannah about 10AM & headed for Hilton Head Island & an anchorage in Skull Creek about 30 miles away. Not much traffic on the ICW so we made good time & arrived about 3PM.
Our plan was to go out by way of the Port Royal Inlet to the Atlantic with our next stop Charleston.
As we settle in for the night & check the weather, our plan comes into question. After much deliberation Rod determined the weather on the Atlantic was not going to be right for us to go outside.
KENT CLOWNING ON THE BOW |
By 8AM we were up & Kent had decided to not continue on with us. We had passed the Skull Creek Marina on our way to anchor & Kent had found that a ferry runs to & from Savannah all day. So we made ready to return Kent to the marina so he could go back & pick up his car. He really wanted to sail the Atlantic with us but there will be another time.
After dropping Kent off we headed north in the ICW. We would make a short day of it. There were many very shallow areas. At one point we had to wait while a push boat made its way around a curve before we went on. The water was only 8ft with no room to maneuver.
We decided to anchor at about 3PM in the South Edisto River, just behind Edisto Island. Rod has gotten very good at keeping track of the tides, we dropped the hook 20ft of water. We arrived at high tide. After shallow water on the ICW this was great. At low tide we had 14ft under the keel. There were thunder storms all around us & we had a wonderful cool breeze. Couldn't ask for a nicer anchorage.
