BEAUTIFUL SHORELINE OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC |
Our passage across the Mona Passage from Luperon to Boquerone took 44 hours. Leaving at 5pm we headed out into the Atlantic. As the sun went down we were less than 2 miles offshore, staying close to shore & out of the oncoming current. Peregrine left the anchorage after we did & as the darkness closed in we could see their steaming light behind us.
SUNSET ON THE MONA PASSAGE |
We could see the city lights of Puerto Plata soon after sunset. The bright colored lights were a sharp contrast to the dark streets of Luperon. We motor sailed through the night & into the Mona Passage. This stretch of water is known for its opposing current, rough water & head winds. Because of the very light winds & perfect weather our experience was quite different than many others that have crossed this path.
Peregrine was within a few miles of Its Perfect the entire crossing. We saw a few huge commercial freighters, plowing toward us in the dark but few other boats. It was almost like we were alone in vast never ending water. The night sky's were bursting with glittering stars & the sky during the day was bright blue with white puffy clouds following us across the water.
BOQUERONE, PUERTO RICO |
By mid day Saturday, May 4 we were turning into the anchorage in the bay at Boquerone. We found Peregrine had arrived ahead of us by more than an hour & we dropped the anchor near by. Very happy with our passage & exhausted from our trip, we were soon in the shower & down for a much needed nap. At the end of a lazy 2nd day, we had drinks aboard Peregrine & spent hours talking about our successful passage & our future plans. BoquerĂ³n is sometimes compared to Key West as a party city. Every afternoon the beach was booming with music. The entertainment lasted until the wee hours of the morning with colored strobe lights lighting up the sky & bongo drums pounding. This is a very popular destination for the people who love to party.
On Monday at noon we weighed anchor & motored about 10 miles south to the small anchorage at Cabo Rojo. From here we will leave at sunrise to round the south west cape turning east once again, destination Ponce.
